The backgrounds in this archive were hand-painted for animated films. Each project came with a new style, palette, and technique.

I entered the work as a lifelong portraitist, painting faces and figures up close. Background art offered something different: To step back. To paint presence without a subject. To paint emotion without a face. The goal was always the same: To create something that could be felt.
