ABOUT
I aspire to create paintings that can affect us as nature does.
As with anyone, being present in the landscape brings about a sense of wonderment and, under certain conditions, a curiously glorified sense of melancholy.
Vincent Van Gogh said, “Art is to console those who are broken by life.” We are not alone in our suffering. If you will, allow this sublime and sympathetic subject to affect you as it has me.
Visually, I remain open to a striking encounter. The idea for a work begins with my feelings toward a subject as well as its connection to events in my life—or more broadly, in our lives.
To remain with a subject deepens meaning, and so I work in the long-standing tradition of painting from life, bearing witness to changing conditions over the course of time and through numerous sessions. A finished work is the result of multiple complete but varied impressions painted on one canvas.
An exploration of and communion with other artists and their works, across time, is a motivator in my own practice.
OVERVIEW
Geraldine Kovats has been painting professionally for nearly thirty years.
Before returning full-time to painting, from 2004-2010, she was a Senior Lecturer and Art and Animation Program Advisor at DigiPen Institute of Technology where a BFA program was being founded.
In addition to teaching, Geraldine made a living in the animation industry; film credits include: Imitation of Life, directed by Mathias Poledna, which debuted at the 2013 Venice Biennale, The Little Prince, which premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, and five Walt Disney animated films. From 2002-2004, she lived and painted in Guanajuato, Mexico, and traveled extensively in Argentina and Chile.
Geraldine holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Academy of Art University where she received two awards of excellence in drawing and painting. A recommendation from a Director at the Academy led to an internship at Walt Disney Feature Animation Studios.
